MSA Elects James A. Cederna and John C. Unkovic to Board
PITTSBURGH, March 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Board of Directors of Mine Safety Appliances Co. (Amex: MSA) has elected James A. Cederna and John C. Unkovic directors.
"Both men bring a wealth of leadership and experience to their new positions, which will allow us to expand the capabilities of our board and make MSA even more successful," said MSA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John T. Ryan III.
In 1999, Mr. Cederna joined Calgon Carbon Corporation as president and chief executive officer and in 2001 was elected chairman of the board. Calgon Carbon Corporation is a global leader in service and solutions for purifying water and air and is the world's largest producer of granular activated carbon. Prior to joining Calgon Carbon, Mr. Cederna was president of Arizona Chemical and an officer of its parent company, International Paper Co. for four years. During that time, he led worldwide activities for the refining and sales of specialty chemicals derived from forest products.
Before joining International Paper Co., Mr. Cederna served as president and chief operating officer of Columbia Chemical, the world's second-largest producer of carbon black. He started his career at Dow Chemical Co., where he worked for more than 20 years. He held various positions in research and development, sales and business management.
Mr. Cederna attended Central Michigan University, where he received a degree in biology/chemistry. He also played football at Central Michigan University and was a Mid-American scholar/athlete.
Mr. Unkovic is a partner with Reed Smith, a large law firm with fifteen offices in the United States and England, and his practice encompasses all aspects of employment and labor law. He also serves as Reed Smith's General Counsel. Mr. Unkovic is currently a member of the board of directors and executive committee of Manchester Bidwell Corp. He is a former vice chairperson of the board of trustees of both the Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Mr. Unkovic attended Harvard College where he received a bachelor's degree in history, and also holds a Juris Doctor degree from Michigan University. He spent a year after law school as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Papua-New Guinea, where he taught at the university's law school. Mr. Unkovic also served as an adjunct professor of law for 11 years at Duquesne University. In addition to his teaching career, Mr. Unkovic is co-author of the reference book "Labor and Employment in Pennsylvania." He is listed in "The Best Lawyers in America."
